News Release: Former Three Time Champion Husker Named as Head Coach for New Professional Team.
The WNFC Nebraska Nite Hawks announced today that Vershan Jackson has been signed as the head coach for their Inaugural 2019 Season. The Nite Hawks are a professional women’s tackle football team new to the Omaha area which features 11 on 11 full tackle football under NCAA rules. They are part of the Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC), which is also in its inaugural season. The WNFC’s mission is to create and foster an environment for female athletes to sustain healthy lifestyles through playing, coaching, and participating in American football at the highest level. The WNFC has partnered with Adidas for their #shebreaksbarriers campaign, which focuses on female tackle football players and empowering women athletes during high-profile events such as Sunday Night Football and even the Super Bowl.
Vershan Jackson was first signed as the NiteHawk’s Head Coach in November and has been dedicating his time to team practices since. Mr. Jackson played high school football for Omaha South with his twin brother Antoine and was named to the Shrine Bowl in 1993. He continued his collegiate football career at UNL and played under the leadership of Tom Osborne from 1994-1998. During that time Jackson became a three-time Division 1 National Champion with the Cornhuskers and captained the team in 1997. Post-college, he went onto play professionally with the Seattle Seahawks 1998, Kansas City Chiefs 1999, and overseas with the NFL Europe Berlin Thunder in 2000.
His love for football has persisted with his passion coaching and mentoring. Prior to his position as head coach, Jackson served as Assistant Running Back and Special Teams Coach for the former men’s professional Omaha NightHawk team. He has also held coaching positions with the Omaha Beef, AG Warriors, Wayne State College, Nebraska Football Academy, and Concordia Lutheran High School.
For Vershan, the opportunity to be the head coach of the Nebraska Nite Hawks is also an opportunity to be a part of something groundbreaking. “This is the first 11-on-11 football that is being taken seriously when it comes to women. After five years away from the game it feels amazing be coaching at a high level again. The athletes are dedicated and it's an honor to watch these women develop as players. They are working hard and believing in the system, and I am excited to see the caliber we put out on the field and excited for the first game.”
Jackson is joined on the Nite Hawks staff by his twin brother Antoine - who has been named Defensive Coordinator. Other members of the staff include Mario Henderson (Central HS), Jaison Jones (MidAmerica Nazarene University), Danny Hayes (Northwest HS), Alan Busch (PYFL) and Collin Mann (Buena Vista University).
The Nite Hawks begin pre-season play on March 23rd, 2019 against the Kansas City Storm at Faiman Field at Bellevue West High School. Their first WNFC game is on April 6th when they host the Denver Bandits at Home. Individual and season tickets are on sale now on their website. Advertising and Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
